Fifield, Oxfordshire


FIFIELD, a parish in the hundred of CHADLINGTON, county of OXFORD, 4½ miles (N. by W.) from Burford, containing 136 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Chancellor of the Cathedral Church of Salisbury, endowed with £16 per annum and £200 private benefaction, £600 royal bounty, and £300 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Hon. and Rev. Hugh Percy. The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The river Evenlode skirts part of the parish. Jane Bray, in 1715, gave a rent-charge of £4. 10. a year for teaching poor children.
