Eynsham, Oxfordshire


EYNSHAM is a considerable village in Oxfordshire, distant from London sixty miles; from Oxford, Woodstock, and Witney, five miles each; it lies in the great road from London to Cheltenham and GLoucester; and is situated within three quarters of a mile of the navigable river Isis, by which river coals are brought from the Oxford and Coventry canal to a wharf within half a mile of this place.

The chief part of the inhabitants are farmers, by whom the greatest part of the poor are employed in husbandry, and some in spinning of yarn for the Witney blanket-manufacturers. — The following are the principal inhabitants:

Within three miles of the village is a fine mansion called Eynsham Hall, the seat of James Duberly, Esq. lord of the manor of Eynsham.
